5 most disappointing signings of the Summer Transfer Window
‘Your favorite club signing a World Superstar’, is one of the best feelings for a football fan. This gets even better if that star signing turns out great at your club.
For every ‘Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United’ from Sporting Lisbon for 16 million pounds, there is a ‘Fernando Torres to Chelsea’ from Liverpool for 50 million pounds. Signings in football have always 2 roads to travel, whether they can turn out to be great or they can turn out to be poor.
With 4 months since the Summer Transfer Window closed and January Transfer Window on the horizon, it is the perfect time to assess 5 signings that have turned out to a disaster.
Malcom- Roma to Barcelona
Malcom’s move to Barcelona had many eyebrows raised, not, just for Barcelona signing a very talented player to an attack that is one of the best attacks in the world but, also for the controversial element attached to the signing with Roma almost signing the Brazilian first.
When Malcom signed for Barcelona, fans, questioned the Brazilians choice as on one hand he could have signed for the Spanish club and fight for his place with the likes for Messi, Suarez, Dembele, and Coutinho. On the other, Brazil could have signed for Roma where he was guaranteed a start and would have become the main man as, Italian side desperately needed to replace Mohamed Salah, who left them in the previous summer.
Unfortunately for the 21-year Brazilian winger, doubts surrounding his transfer have so far turned out to the right as the Brazilian has just spent 82 minutes on the pitch for the Catalonian side.
Fred -Shakhtar Donetsk to Manchester United
The downfall of Jose Mourinho’s tenure at Manchester United has been his signings, one after another, be it Mkhitaryan, Lindelof, Bailey or now Fred have been really poor.
The midfielder was signed by Manchester United from Shakhtar Donetk for a whooping fee of 50 million pounds and it will be fair to say that the Brazilian midfielder hasn’t been that good in the Manchester United so far.
It’s not always on a player that if a signing hasn’t materialized as manager plays a major role in player’s success. In Fred’s case, Mourinho has played a major role in the failing of Brazilian midfielder at Old Trafford so far, with the Brazilian playing just 7 games for the 20 times Premier League Champions.
Fabinho- Liverpool to Monaco
When Liverpool acquired the services of Brazilian midfielder Fabinho’s services, everything about the signing looked so perfect, a defensive midfielder that Liverpool has craved for so long.
Very few people could have predicted that the Brazilian would have such a marginal impact on the Merseyside club.
Liverpool acquired the services of the former Monaco captain for 40 million Pounds and so far the midfielder has shown nothing that can justify his price. Fabinho has just started 3 games for the Reds in the Premier League and even Liverpool fans will agree that they expected more from the midfielder.
Bakayoko- Chelsea to AC Milan
Bakayoko arrived at Milan in August following a lacklustre first season at Stamford Bridge, having originally signed for Chelsea last year from Monaco on a five-year deal for a fee around £40m.
Italy side getting Bakayoko on a load for a season looked a decent signing for all the parties. And boy oh boywe were wrong.
“Bakayoko has to learn how to get the ball," the 40-year-old told his post-match press conference. "We must work correctly. It will not be easy.
"One week is not enough to remove the defects of a player. I would have preferred to be managing older, more experienced club players." These quotes by Gutuso, Frenchman’s manager at Milan come to mind when we think about his loan move to the Italian capital.
Aleksandr Golovin- Monaco to CSKA Moskow
Golovin, Russia’s star player in the FIFA World Cup, 2018 was on top of the World. It seemed every big team in Europe, be it Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea or his current club Monaco wanted the services of Golovin.
22 year old’s time at League 1 side started with an injury and since then Monaco has seen their club fall in the relegation zone and has even sacked their long-term coach Leonardo Jardim.
The budding star was seen as Monaco's main signing this summer after beating off competition from Chelsea for his signature. Who could have predicted that the midfielder would have played just 5 games for Monaco in League 1 and the 2016-17 champions would be on 19th position in November.
