Former Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Arjun Munda has been elected as president of the Jharkhand Archery Association. He was chosen unanimously at a meeting of the association which took place in Jharkhand's steel city, Jamshedpur. As a result, Arjun is set to replace Sunil Bhaskaran from the post.
Munda's election took place only two days after he was nominated as a member in Rajnath Singh-headed manifesto preparing committee by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah.
Earlier, Munda had set up Archery Academy at Seraikela-Kharswa district in 2004. The biggest product of the Archery Academy has been Ranchi girl Deepika Kumari (who recently got engaged to Atanu Das).
Munda, after being given the responsibility as the president of the academy, said, "Not only in Jharkhand but all tribal youth have talent to become an archer. There is need to promote them. I will work to promote archery in Jharkhand."
Munda, who served as a member of parliament having been elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from the prestigious Jamshedpur constituency in 2009 parliamentary elections, is an avid golfer. Munda has always been interested in promoting archery at national as well as international levels. Further, he plays flute and almost all tribal musical instruments widely used in the area.
Archery, in India, is slowly gathering momentum as well. If states like Jharkhand, who aren't talked about on a daily basis, can thrive more on this sport and bring in some more Deepika Kumaris, it will only benefit the country as a whole, and Munda's involvement in his new tenure will be vital for this.
