It proved to be a blessing in disguise for tenth ranked Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain as he replaced the top ranked tennis player of the year Rafael Nadal after the 16-timeGrand Slams champion pulled out of the ATP finals due to knee injury.
Nadal, who had pulled out of the Paris Masters after confirming his top spot in the season ending rankings, lost his first match of the group and was hopping and struggling between the points. He pulled out from the tour putting an abrupt end to 2017 which also meant that he would have to wait for atleast one more year to clinch his maiden trophy at the Finals.
Busta will take on Dominic Thiem in the next match. Busta, who had to miss out on a spot after Jack Sock, surprised everyone by winning the Paris Masters title. The Spanish no. 2, after reaching the US Open semi-finals, has won just one match (in Vienna) in five tournaments played but should look to perform better in the lucky break.
