Roberto Bautista Agut claimed his second Auckland Classic title with victory over second seed Juan Martin Del Potro.
The Spaniard romped through the first set in 31 minutes as he broke Del Potro three times and produced numerous forehand winners with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
Del Potro had advanced to the final behind his booming forehand that nullified the superb defensive game of David Ferrer.
Bautista Agut said, “It was an unbelievable match today. I have been fighting all week and felt like I wasn’t playing good tennis but today I did.
“Juan Martin is very tough to beat and I think I just played two amazing games at the end of the match.”
Meanwhile, Del Potro, who added he had played most of his matches in Auckland at night and was slow to adjust to the hot and humid conditions.
He said, “Roberto was just playing so well. He moves so fast from the baseline and he made it tough.”
Both players will now turn their attention to next week’s Australian Open in Melbourne, where Bautista Agut will play compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the first round.
