It was a fitting finale for the Indian contingent as ace pistol shooters Saurabh Chaudhry and Manu Bhaker combined well to end the competiotion on a high and win the Gold medal at the final event of the ISSF World Cup here at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Ranges, New Delhi.
In the five teams final, the Indian pair of Saurabh and Manu shot 483.4 to win the title in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed team event. The silver went to China (477.7) and Korea took bronze (418.8).
The Indian pair was trailing after the first series of ten shots, at second spot with Korea leading the field followed by Ukraine. The position remained the same after the second series, but Saurabh and Manu worked their way up and closed the gap after the third series, with scores at 203.4 for the Koreans and 202.1 for the Indians.
Thereafter, the Indians changed the gears and managed to have an edge over Korea. Indian team’s score was 341.9 while Korea’s score was 341.0 at the elimination of the 5th placed team. As the eliminations were going the Indians were widening the gap against their competitors too.
In the end, the Indians had a comprehensive win over the Chinese who overtook the Koreans to take home the Silver medal.
The Indians summed up the World Cup with 3 Gold medals one each in 10m Air Rifle Women to Apurvi Chandela, in 10m Air Pistol Men to Saurabh Chaudhary and a Gold in the mixed air pistol team event.
Earlier in the qualifications, home crowd favorites Saurabh and Bhaker had a brilliant start and equaled the World Record for the qualification with a score of 778. Another Indian pair of Heena Sidhu and Abhishek Verma could finish only 9th in the qualifications with a score of 770.
In the 10 m, Air Rifle mixed team event both the Indian pairs (Anjum Moudgil & Ravi Kumar) and (Apurvi Chandela & Deepak Kumar) finished 7th and 25th respectively in the qualifications and failed to move ahead into the finals.
