In what could be seen as a blessing in disguise for the sport of Boxing, International Boxing Association (AIBA) president Gafur Rahimov announced his resignation on Friday.
He has claimed that “politically based discussions” were proving to be an impediment in the organization’s progress as the sport of Boxing battles to remain part of the Olympic program.
Rahimov was voted in November to the top of the amateur boxing body, even though he was on the U.S. Treasury Department’s sanctions list “for providing material support” to a criminal organization, which the Uzbek had strongly denied at every possible forum.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was already at loggerheads with the AIBA over its financial irregularities and when Rahimov took over as the President of AIBA , the relations between the 2 bodies went from bad to worse. So much so that the murmurs of Boxing to be shelved for the 2020 Olympics, were gaining ground.
