Crystal Palace goalkeeperWayne Hennessey has found himself at the center of controversy after he allegedly made a Nazi salute while out with his teammates.
Wayne Hennessey, the Welsh international, appeared to be making the gesture in a picture posted on Instagram by his teammate, Max Meyer.
But Hennessey insists he was waving at the person taking the photo and cupping his hand over his mouth as he shouted at them.
“Yesterday evening I had a meal with my teammates and we had a group photograph,” the 31-year-old wrote on Twitter.
“I waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it and at the same time put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry. It’s been brought to my attention that frozen in a moment by the camera this looks like I am making a completely inappropriate type of salute.
“I can assure everyone I would never ever do that and any resemblance to that kind of gesture is absolutely coincidental. Love and peace Wayne.”
However the Welsh stopper’s explanation has been criticised on Twitter as one user branded it “the worst excuse you’ll ever see”.
Another Twitter user linked the pose to Max Meyer’s German heritage stating, “Is it a coincidence that Wayne Hennessey made that salute to Max Meyer taking the photo who is German”.
The image comes at a time when racism has resurfaced as a major issue in football. A Tottenham fanwas banned for four-years from football and fined by a magistrates court.
Hennessey could face an investigation from Crystal Palace or even the Football Association.
Hennessey, who has 81 caps for Wales, recently lost his place in the Palace team to Vicente Guaita but he started against Grimsby as Palace scraped through.
Grimsby played almost the entire match with 10 men after a player was sent off in the second minute for a high challenge.
