In an exclusive interview to Sports Flashes after his revelation of the reasons behind his retirement, hockey legend, Sardar Singh has categorically made it clear that David John, the High Performance Director appointed by Hockey India, was the reason behind his departure from the international hockey.
The transcript of the interview is as follows:
Q: Your recent outburst at the Director High Performance and the foreign coach has given birth to the controversy around your retirement. Who do you think was the main culprit and why are you so late in disclosing it?
Sardar Singh: Well, I was in an event and I just made a remark on a question asked on the reason behind my retirement. I told them David john, the High performance Director was the reason behind my retirement. But he needs to take care of the responsibilities he’s bestowed upon rather than making any remarks.
Q: There were reports in the media after the Asian Games debacle that the performance of senior players including Rupinder Pal, PR Sreejesh, SV Sunil and yourself was not up to the mark. Was this the reason behind your retirement?
Sardar Singh: Well, I have played for the country for 15 years and I don’t care much about what David John says, who has the habit of passing statements to the press and media without thinking . Being a High Performance Director, he should be aware of his responsibilities, how to take senior players in tandem and point out where they are lacking and advise them. His job is not to just travel with the team and come out with a statement out of the blue. He needs to take care of the hockey at the grassroots. If such a statement of my poor performance or fitness had come from coaches like Roelant Oltmans, Terry Walsh, that was still . Infact, some one of the stature of Ric Charlesworth had recently said that Sardar can still play for the Indian team.
Q: Do you think David John can again create problems for the selection of senior players for the upcoming World Cup?
Sardar Singh: After my incident and his critical remarks on other seniors like Sreejesh and others, he has been made to sit out of the selection committee. The selection will certainly be done on merit.
Q: Do you have plans of coming to coaching?
Sardar Singh: The game of hockey has given me so much. I would like to give it back with nurturing the young kids to this game and gradually rise up the ladder to coach the seniors.
