Minnesto Timberwolves have been in the news ever since their victory, 105-86, against Los Angeles Lakers on January 6. Their coach and predient Tom Thibodeau's exit and Derrick Rose's statement on his doubters raised quite a few eyebrows. While Rose apologized for his recent comments (when asked how he would perform now that his trusted coach has been sacked, his reply was "go kill yourself"), he credited Tom's coaching credentials for finding the better player inside him.
Rose opined, "I have a lot of confidence in myself. Thibs was just the coach that believed in me. I mean, he jump-started my career again and for that, I'll always be thankful. Right when I got the call, I was in Cleveland practicing at Cleveland State, by myself, with me and my little guy Art. It was me and him in the gym, by ourselves, five days a week.
I had a kid at that time, my baby girl. And no teams wasn't looking for me at all. I was basically out of the league. And even coming here, everybody didn't know I was gonna play this way. Like, [Thibodeau] believed me. I believed in myself. My family believed in me. And my little guy Art believed in me. And we got it done. But like I said, think that I'm not gonna play the same way, kill yourself, because I believe in myself."
Ryan Saunders takes charge
The Wolves have appointed assistant coach Ryan Saunders, Flip Saunders' son, as interim head coach. On this regard, Rose added, "But, at the same time, I'm very cool with Ryan. And I've talked to him before and after practice. And I told him to run with this opportunity. But with Thibs, like, he took a chance on me when a couple of organizations had s----ed on me."
It will be interesting to see how Derrick fares after this controversial sacking of his mentor and former coach, Thibodeau. So far, he averages 18.9 points and 4.8 assists per game while shooting a career-high 46.2 percent from 3-point range.
