The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a platform which often turns fairytales into realties. It can be through a brilliant catch taken in the field which catches a lot of eyes, a breathtaking knock, a super spell, or even by unexpectedly turning out to be a hot figure in the auction room, which involves plenty of franchise’s battling over an individual who hasn’t been witnessed to an extent by the masses.
Such was the case of Tamil Nadu’s Varun Chakravarthy who was sold for a jaw dropping amount of Rs 8.4 crores to Kings XI Punjab, and a result of it became the most expensive player to be auctioned that day along with Jayedev Unadkat. The ‘mystery spinner’ from the TNPL had impressed local crowds by picking 22 wickets in 9 matches, which ultimately served as the major reason for him being involved in a tug of war among franchise owners.
For Chakravarthy , it was a dream which he didn’t want to wake up to, but his dream was turned into reality when India’s front line spinner and KXIP’s captain – Ravi Ashwin gave the rookie a call to congratulate him and also welcomed him to the Kings' family.
“The moment I was hugging my father, Ashwin called me. He said, ‘Welcome to KXIP. I am really happy for you. We will meet soon. All the best.’ I am excited to play under Ashwin’s leadership. We are from the same state and he will be my captain in the IPL. He is such a talented and great player. I am looking forward to a great season. Ashwin has an abundance of experience. He has played all formats of the game. I will learn a lot from him,” Chakravarthy said
“I watch his videos daily. I watch him very closely. His control over line and length is amazing. He bamboozled many batsmen in his playing days. He is an enigma with the ball. Watching his videos helps me a lot on the cricket field. I have never met Anil Kumble, but I hope the IPL will give me a chance to meet the legend. TNPL gave me a platform and IPL has recognition. TNPL gave me huge exposure. I learnt how to bowl in death overs and under pressure.” he further added.
