It was a day highlighted by performances from Asian Games silver medalist Dharun Ayyasamy and javelin thrower Shivpal at the ongoing 23rd Federation Cup Athletics championships in Patiala, Punjab.
Dharun surpassed his own national record of 48.96s in the 400m hurdles with a time of 48.8s to clinch the Gold medal for Tamil Nadu. In the process, he qualified for the Asian Athletics Championships as well. Silver medalist MP Jabir who clocked 49.53 also qualified for the championship to be held in Doha in April.
In the Men’s Javelin throw Shivpal Singh of Uttar Pradesh threw 82.56m to take home the gold medal whereas Vipin Kasana of Delhi took the Silver medal with a best throw of 81.23m. both the athletes qualified for the Asian Championships.
Asian Games silver medalist Dutee Chand ruled the roost in the 200m Women’s run as she finished at the top with a timing of 23.35s.
There were some big names too which disappointed, Continental Cup Bronze medalist Arpinder Singh failed to find proper footing and finished 4th with a distance of 16.34m. Praveen Chithravel of Tamil nadu took the Gold medal at the event with a jump of 16.51m and qualified for the Asian Championships.
In the Shot Put too, Asian Games Gold medalist failed to live up to the billing and finished 8th. The event was won by Jasdeep Singh of Punjab.
