The Asian Games of 2018 has been an enthralling one for India. With many of the results turning out to be pleasant ones, while some were groundbreaking. Here are the 5 surprises that have taken place in Jakarta so far.
1) Iran shocks India in Kabaddi :
The semi final match between India and Iran seemed to be an regulatory match for India before the match had even begun. But the Iranians had other plans as they completely dominated team India and beat them 27 -18 to reach the finals and win the gold which India had never lost in their Kabaddi history. The Indian women who were also the defending champions suffered the same fate from the hands of the same foe as they had to settle for silver with a score of 27 – 24.
2)Making way for new heroes :
Indian Olympic heroes Sushil Kumar and Sakshi Malik had a lot of hopes from the general public to fetch a medal in Jakarta. But both athletes fell short of their target and crashed out of the event. Bajran Punia and Vinesh Phogat turned out to be the ones to compensate the prior shortcomings with gold medals of their own.
3)Two teenage sensations and Rahi Snobat who make history:
16 year old Saurabh Chaudhary , and 15 year old Shardul Vihan turned a lot of heads for their fantastic display in the 10m air pistol and men’s double trap event by winning gold and silver respectively. While Rahi Sarnobat became the first Indian woman to register a gold medal in Indian shooting history.
4) Dominating the Hockey Field :
The Indian men and women team have been rampant in their Asian Games campaign by beating Hong Kong 26-0 in the men’s category, while the women’s team fell short of just one goal to break the record made in 1982 for the highest number of goals scored as they beat Kazakhstan 21-0.
5)Rowing our way to glory :
While India isn’t much aware of Rowing and doesn’t share as much optimism as they do for other sports, Swaran Singh, Dattu Bhokanal, Om Prakash and Sukhmeet Singh, Dushyant Singh, Rohit Kumar and Bhagwan Singh gave the country a new perspective to the sport as they won a gold and two bronze medals in a matter of hours in the morning.
While we’re midway in the Asian Games of 2018, there are a lot more events to look forward to with a lot more surprises in store as well as a lot more unoforseen glory for India.
