Manchester City reclaimed the top spot of the Premier League table courtesy of a 2-0 victory against Fulham in Saturday's early kickoff at Craven Cottage.
On Saturday, the Citizens only needed five minutes to break the deadlock, Bernardo Silva firing a low effort past Sergio Rico. Ilkay Gundogan then saw his shot kept out by Rico before Kevin De Bruyne went close to doubling City's lead.
The lead got doubled in the 27th minute when Joe Bryan was dispossessed and Bernardo Silva took full advantage, playing in Sergio Aguero whose rising shot was too good for Rico.
City had penalty appeals waved away when Raheem Sterling went down under Timothy Fosu-Mensah's challenge and on the stroke of half-time Gundogan flashed a shot narrowly wide. After a low-key opening to the second period, Rico saved Sterling’s curling shot on the hour mark before Fosu-Mensah blocked Bernardo Silva's strike.
Kyle Walker’s hard shot hit the outside of a post after he had been set up by his England team-mate Sterling, who curled a late effort high and wide, while Fulham were unable to create any clear-cut openings even though City barely moved out of second gear after the interval.
Manager Pep Guardiola said, "The first 15-20 minutes was incredible with the way we played.
"After the international break, you usually miss a bit with your rhythm, but the effort was there. This game was tricky - 12:30 on Saturday, a sunny day. That is unusual and that is why I am so satisfied.
"We are going to do everything to win. No matter the next competition, we will win the game.
"Fulham was a tough game for Liverpool and Chelsea so we knew it was going to be tricky.
"We don't think too much about what people say about the quadruple.
"What Liverpool and Man City have done in the Premier League, both deserve the credit. That's why we are here."
The victory was City's seventh in a row in the league, while Fulham have now lost each of their last eight in the top flight to remain in 19th position, still 13 points from the safety of 17th spot.
