Following a stellar climb in rankings, G Sathiyan is now eager that the gaps in Indian table tennis be filled up fast in order to take the team forward. The highest-ranked Indian table tennis player wants a foreign coach to be inducted as soon as possible.
Sathiyan said, “We should get a foreign coach as early as possible,” said Sathiyan, who rose to No. 28 in the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rankings. He added, “The absence of a coach is a thing to worry about. Even a highlevel Indian coach will do. We need a person who can manage the Indian team and can form a roadmap for us. There is a big void between players and the administration, and that’s why we need a coach. On the personal front, I am really lucky that I have my coach Subramaniam Raman and trainer Ramji Srinivas. They have prepared a calendar for me till Tokyo Olympics,” he said.
On being asked about India’s former coach Massimo Costantini, under whom the Indians claimed the historic Asian Games medals, the 26-year-old stated,“To be honest, the work Costantini had done with the national squad was just amazing. Many positive results came during his tenure. We are a much improved unit now.”
In January 2018, Sathiyan featured into the top 50. A year later, the Chennai lad added three medals at the Commonwealth Games, including the men's team gold, and a bronze in the same event at the Asian Games that followed. As a result, Sathiyan’s ranking shot up, courtesy a fine show in several tournaments — he reached pre-quarterfinals of Qatar Open, Australian Open and Austria Open respectively.
What was most impressive was that in the meantime, Sathiyan prevailed over many higher-ranked players like Jeong Sangeun, Marcos Freitas and Oshima Yuya among others.
