Venue was Taj Mahal hotel in Delhi, occasion was a Virat Kohli press conference, everyone was waiting for the Indian captain so that they can get a glimpse of their star; but when Shibani Dandekar announced the name of the guests, there were two stars who walked out- Pullela Gopichand and obviously Virat Kohli, along with Sanjiv Goenka, the chairman of RP-SG. Soon the proceedings began. Together the three launched Indian Sports Honours awards- the idea behind which is to create a platform to reward sports personalities for their achievements during the course of an year.
Sports Journalists, fans and other eminent person will be involved in selecting the winners. The jury is headed by Gopichand while Virat Kohli doesn't want to be awarded for it. Kohli said that he wanted to give back to sports and wanted that the monopoly of just one game should be broken by other sports and that's why he has set up a platform for an award which sees INR 2crores invested annually. Kohkli said- "I am thankful to Gopi sir for bringing back badminton to lives. Badminton has seen many medals in last 4-5 years. Similarly, I want other sports to do well as well. It would be an achievement for me if we start doing well in other sports after few years.I want to create a sports culture."
Speaking on the occasion, the head coach of badminton said, "Amwards of this nature are what motivates sportsperson, specially the youngsters. I thank Virat for taking such an initiative and for thinking about other sports."
Sanjeev said that he was not very good sportsperson in his childhood and that's something which made him feel like a handicap and that's why he wants to inflict a culture of sports in the country. The owner of the Rising Puner Supergiant, IPL team, said- "Sports is something that unites country. I was quite poor as a sportsman and that made me feel like a handicap."
The inaugural award ceremony will be held on November 11 in Mumbai. The RP-SG Indian Sports Honours is dedicated to rewarding excellence in the field of sports. These Awards will also help identify and support athletes with potential and award them scholarships. Virat Kohli and Sanjiv Goenka have jointly partnered to create this platform that will honour exceptional performances.
