India Women hockey team began the 2-Test series against Ireland with a 1-1 draw in Murcia, Spain. The Indian team who is on a 10-day tour to Spain had finished their 4-test series against hosts Spain at 1-1 and were looking impressive in the opening quarter.
Ace drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur scored in the 18th minute to put the Indians ahead before World cup silver medalists Ireland fought back to draw 1-1 in the opening match.
Earlier, India got off to a good start and earned a Penalty Corner in the 4th minute but failed to capitalize. In the second quarter though, India made up for the lost opportunity when they were awarded a PC for infringement by an Irish defender and Gurjit Kaur didn’t falter in putting the ball past the Irish goalkeeper Emma Buckley.
While India defended the lead well with a disciplined structure, the Irish pushed for an elusive goal. It was only in the 45th minute when Ireland struck a field goal through Sarah Hawkshaw that levelled the score to 1-1.
The final quarter saw both teams play at par with each other but India's goalkeeper Savita made a brilliant attempt to deny Ireland a goal off a PC minutes before the final hooter ending the match at level terms.
The visitors will end their 10-day tour of Spain with the second match against Ireland on Sunday.
