Explosive Indian opening batsman and seasoned IPL campaigner Shikhar Dhawan has been a force to be reckoned with in India’s cash-rich league and he believes that his return to Delhi Capitals will be a ‘homecoming’ for him in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The left-handed batsman has been playing with Sunrisers Hyderabad for the previous four editions of the league. Ahead of the new season, the Sunrisers Hyderabad swapped Shikhar Dhawan with Delhi Capitals, previously known as Delhi Daredevils, in favor of three players – Vijay Shankar, Abhishek Sharma, and Shahbaz Nadeem.
Speaking about his homecoming, Dhawan shared that it feels great to be back in Delhi as this is the place where he was born and played most of his cricket.
Dhawan shared, “Ghar wapasi ho gayi hai ji meri (It is a homecoming for me). This is where I grew up. So, it is good to come back. On the cricket front, it is good that I will be playing half my games at Feroz Shah Kotla Ground and I have played there for so many years that I know the ground and the pitches there.”
Adding, “I am adjusting well to it actually. I am bringing 11 years of experience. I was a rookie back then. Learned lots of stuff from all the senior players – AB de Villiers, Viru bhai, Gauti bhai, Glenn McGrath, Daniel Vettori. I remember all of them.”
Many experts of the game believe that the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been the reason why India gets such an aggressive pool of players. Echoing their sentiments, Dhawan shared that IPL is the best thing that has ever happened to Indian cricket as a league like that opens a lot of opportunities for the youngsters.
Dhawan concluded, “The first year I played for Delhi franchise, I shared the dressing room with them and it was a really big deal for me. Just spending time with them was great and that increased my confidence level. When I joined Mumbai Indians, I got the chance the chance to open with Sachin Tendulkar. Even with Deccan Chargers, I played with Kumar Sangakkara and when I scored more runs than him, step by step it gave me confidence.”
“That is why I feel that our youngsters are so confident because they have got big exposure and it helps a lot. They bring that experience in the Indian team like Kuldeep Yadav has done well as Yuzvendra Chahal.”
The 2019 edition of the IPL is scheduled to start from March 23.
