India’s premier Athletics championship, the Federation Cup, began in Patiala with the 23rd edition of the tournament and noticeable performances marked the first day, given the number of big names the tournament has drawn.
There were few finals on the first day of the competition and in the 5000m Women’s final Uttar Pradesh’s Parul Choudhary took the Gold medal against the more fancied L Suriya with a timing of 15:38.35. In men’s 5000m, Gavit Murali Kumar of Gujarat won the gold medal by clocking 13:54.9s in the absence of G Lakshmanan. No athlete cleared Asian Athletics Championship qualifying mark.
In the Women’s Discus throw Kamalpreet Kaur of Punjab won the Gold medal and also cleared the Asian Athletics Championship qualifying mark with a throw of 60.25m (AFI’s Qualification mark was 58.50m). Navjeet Kaur Dhillon and Suravi Biswas finish second and third respectively.

Javelin Thrower Shivpal Singh’s 81.85m throw which saw him top the Javelin Men’s qualifications saw him surpass the qualification mark for the Asian Championships which was set at 80.75. The final is set to take place on 16th.
The Federation Cup is also the final opportunity for the athletes to qualify for the Asian Athletics Championships to be held in Doha from 21-24 April.
