India’s ace badminton player Saina Nehwal claimed Indonesia Masters title in bizarre fashion as she got a walkover from Carolina Marin who retired mid way through the first game due to an ankle injury.
The reigning Olympic champion Marin was leading 10-4 against the 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist before when she finally retired. The Spaniard was in control of the game when she first felt the pain before conceding the 3rd point.
Carolina raced to 3-0 lead in the opening few exchanges and then stretched her lead to 9-2 on the back of a 4 point streak. But all of a sudden Carolina twisted her ankle after a crosscourt was thrown at her by Saina. She conceded that point and then came back to score the 10th point for her in the game too. But the next point and the rally saw her in excruciating pain when she decided to withdraw.
The Indian though has started the 2019 BWF World Tour fairly well. Last week she had made it to the semifinals of the Malaysia Masters and this week she has claimed her first title of the season.
During the post-match interview said - "This is not good at all. She is a very tough competitor and it is very unfortunate.” She also added that Indonesia has always been lucky for her.
