India’s ace Women’s paddler Manika Batra made it to the Round of 16 at the Seamaster 2019 ITTF World Tour, Hungarian Open at Budapest.
Batra edged past home crowd favourite Georgina Pota of Hungary in a grueling contest which stretched to 7 games. The Indian got past the higher ranked Hungarian, World No. 35, with a scoreline of 10-12, 12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8, 8-11, 12-10.
The Round of 32 match saw fortunes changing after every game where one was found chasing the other. Earlier, the World no. 51 paddler made it to the main draw after earning convincing wins over Christina Kallberg of Sweden, Galia Dvorak of Spain and Daniela Monteiro of Romania in the preliminary rounds of qualification.
Manika came into the tournament after having won a Bronze medal in the Women Singles and Gold Medal in the Mixed Doubles event with Sharath Kamal Achanta at the 80th Senior National Table Tennis Championship.
The Men’s Doubles pair of veteran Sharath Kamal Achanta and young G Sathiyan also made it to the main draw but could not sustain the form they had shown in the preliminary round. The Indians were ousted by the Chinese Taipei pair Cheng-Ting Liao and Yun Ju Lin in straight games with a scoreline of 9-11, 7-11, 6-11. They too had it easy in the qualification round and won both their matches without dropping a game against a pair from Portugal and Belarus respectively.
The Hungarian Open is the season opener and marks the beginning of the ITTF World Tour 2019.
