Maria Sharapova announced that she will not be participating in the upcoming Italian Open owing to a lingering right shoulder injury. The tournament will take place from May 13th to 19th in Rome.
The injury scare puts Sharapova in doubt for the French Open as well, which begins at the end of May.
The organisers for the Italian Open announced that 45th ranked Viktoria Kuzmova will replace the three-time champion. Sharapova has won the Italian Open on three separate occasions in 2011, 2012 and 2015.
