Ace Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has pulled out her name from the upcoming edition of Asian Games, which is going to begin from August 18 in Indonesia.
The 23-year-old Mirabai, who won the first gold medal for the country at 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, requested the Indian Weightlifting Federation through a letter to allow her time to recover from a backache and prepare for the Olympic qualifiers.
On Monday, India chief coach Vijay Sharma recommended that Mirabai is given rest so as to give her time to recover from the problem and prepare for the Olympic qualifiers. “I have submitted a report to the federation. Now they have to take a decision. I am of the opinion that in such less time it’s not good to take a heavy load. The Olympic qualifiers event is approaching and that is more important than the Asian Games,” Sharma said.
Chanu had won the silver medal in the women's 48 kg weight class at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow, then she went on broke the games record en-route to the gold medal at the 2018 edition of the event held in Gold Coast. Her biggest achievement came in 2017 when she won the gold medal at World Weightlifting Championships held in Anaheim, United States.
