The legend of Dutch football, Ruud Gullit, assessed that money cannot buy Champions League titles.
He expressed his opinion in response to the failure of Manchester City to step into the Champions League semifinals stage.
Man City has been knocked out of the Champions League after losing the tie to Tottenham Hotspur.
Losing 0-1 at the first leg, Man City won 4-3 at home in the second leg. However, the victory was in vain because City lost on away goal rule.
Man City is known as a rich club that is reinforced by many stars, and handled by Pep Guardiola who delivered Barcelona two Champions League titles.
"You can't buy a team to do it," Gullit said on City’s failure to progress in the last-four stage.
For Gullit, Guardiola is a person who is still ambitious to win the Champions League. But he failed to do so after leaving Barcelona.
According to the Dutch legend, Guardiola no longer has a player of the caliber of Lionel Messi.
"I see that passion and I see what motivates him, and this (eliminated from the Champions League) is a big blow to this team (Man City)," Gullit said.
After the departure of Pep, Barca still managed to win the Champions League in 2015. At that time, Barca even beat Bayern Munich in the semifinals.
According to Gullit, Barca's current strength is the legacy left by Frank Rijkaard, not Pep. Messi began to develop under the care of the Dutch tactician.
"Of course when he was with Barcelona he had an unbelievable team inherited from Rijkaard, who Messi had already made his debut under. And then Messi became even more important. And Messi was vital in a lot of games for him when he was with Barcelona," concluded Gullit.
