Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hopes to keepIlkay Gundogan at the Etihad Stadium next season. However, he claimed the player is still hesitant to sign a new contract.
Gundogan was brought in from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 and was the first player to be recruited by Guardiola at Man City. The contract will only expire in July 2020.
However, Gundogan is not the mainstay of Guardiola's players in Man City's midfield due to several factors, including injury. The German player has only recorded 99 matches since 2016.
Even so, Guardiola still hopes Gundogan will be looking forward to stay longer at Man City. He is known to be negotiating with club management regarding contract extensions.
"The first season, he can't play because of a severe injury, around six or seven months, but when he can play many matches, he is a very important player," said Pep Guardiola.
"Gundogan knows what we wants. He knows what we think about him, but it is the same as the cases in the past. In the end, the final decision is not in our hands," he continued.
At present, the negotiation process is still going on and Guardiola helped to convince the 28-year-old midfielder to stay at City.
"It's just that, if it doesn't work, there's nothing else that can be done besides giving it away," said Pep.
"We tried to talk to him. We want him to extend his contract here. Yesterday will be better than today, and today is better than tomorrow. If he refuses, we cannot do anything else," addethe former Barcelona coach.
"If he wants to survive 100 percent, then an agreement will be made. We are still in the negotiation process," he concluded.
Guardiola's side sit second in the Premier League - a point behind leaders Liverpool - and remain in contention for aquadruple having lifted the Carabao Cup at Wembley following a penalty shootout victory over Chelsea last Sunday.
