India's mixed doubles pairing of Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy is going from strength to strength, with the latest achievement coming at the China Open.
The Indian duo produced two fighting victories on Tuesday to qualify for the main draw in the mixed doubles category of the China Open Super Series Premier event. Ponnappa and Rankireddy got past Chinese Taipei's Lee Jhe-Huei and Wu Ti Jung 24-22, 21-7 before edging out the Danish combine of Niclas Nohr and Sara Thygesen 21-16, 19-21, 22-20.
Ponnappa and Satwik will now face another Danish duo, Mathias Christiansen and Christinna Pedersen, in the first round of the main draw on Wednesday. They will be joined in the main draw by India's leading female badminton players, PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal.
World number 2 Kidambi Srikanth will give the China Open a miss, having pulled out due to a muscle strain prior to the event.
