The year 2018 has seen Indian sports make it to uncharted territories. Be it athletics, badminton, wrestling or Table Tennis to be precise.
And one player who has made a mark for herself is Manika Batra, the Golden girl of Table Tennis in India. She has had an amazing 2018 where she had multiple medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games including a Gold Medal in the Women’s Singles, another Gold Medal in the Women’s Team event, a Silver in the Women’s Doubles with Mouma Das and a Bronze in the Mixed Doubles event with Sathiyan Gnan Sekaran. She didn’t stop there and made history with the Bronze medal at the Jakarta Asian Games in the Mixed Doubles event pairing up with veteran Sharath Kamal Achanta.
Her success story was recognized by the ITTF as well when the world’s Table Tennis governing body conferred the Breakthrough Star of the Year Award in the annual award ceremony held in Incheon, Korea. The success of the last year has spilled over to 2019 as well and she has managed to further improve her ranking at 51st spot, which is career best for her.
The Men’s Team too has made it to the 11th position with 280 points and is indeed at par with 9th placed Hong Kong and 10th placed Portugal who has the same number of points. Top Indian men paddlers Sharath Kamal & Sathiyan Gnan Sekaran maintain their 30th and 31st position respectively in the latest rankings released by the ITTF.
