Rookie Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar bagged India’s first silver medal at the Under-23 Wrestling World Championships being held in Bucharest, Romania.
Ravi Kumar lost his final duel against Japan’s Toshihiro Hasegawa 6-0 in a tightly contested match. Before reaching the final of the 57kg freestyle category, he defeated Jahongirmirza Turobov of Uzbekistan in the semi-final by 10-8. The 10-8 win against the Uzbek wrestler ensured India’s first medal at the ongoing champions. He had earlier defeated Taras Markovych of Ukraine 12-4 in the quarterfinal. In the pre-quarterfinals, the Indian defeated Razvan Marian Kovacs of Romania 7-5.
Ravi Kumar has now joined the likes of Bajrang Punia (65kg, 2017) and Om Prakash Vinod Kumar (70kg, 2017) to become the third Indian to win the silver medal at this event. No Indian has yet won a Gold Medal at the event. Ravi Kumar also has Junior World Wrestling Championship silver under his belt in the 55 kg weight category.
The day also saw other wrestlers vying to finish in medal rounds but all faltered. Parveen Malik who lost his bout in the qualification will have a second go at the bronze medal in the 74 kg freestyle in the repechage round. Another Indian wrestler Uphar Sharma bowed out of the 86 kg freestyle in the 2nd round against Russia’s Arthur Naifonov by 10-0, owing to technical superiority from the Russian. Sunil Kumar, who was the lone Indian wrestler to make it to the quarterfinals during the day bowed out to his opponent Shamil Zubairov of Azerbaijan, 10-4 in a tightly contested match which was won by the Azerbaijani wrestler in the dying moments of the bout. He still has a chance to hang the copper color metal around his neck, as he will be fighting in the repechage round tomorrow.
