The Italian hooligan who "destroyed" the life of a Liverpool supporter Sean Cox and his family in a "brutal and vicious" attack ahead of a Champions League tie has been jailed for three-and-half-years.
Simone Mastrelli, a married man with children, was at the front of a group of between 50 and 60 'ultras' in distinctive clothing with many covering their heads and faces, and some carrying belts in their hands as weapons.
astrelli pleaded guilty and admitted that he attacked Sean Cox , who was injured before the Champions League match between Rome and Liverpool on 24 April. The Roman was sentenced to three years imprisonment by the judges of the Preston court.
It was ascertained that Cox, a 53-year-old Irishman, had gone to Liverpool to watch the match with his brother. He found himself by chance in the midst of the clashes between the Giallorossi fans and British supporters and was hit by Mastrelli.
Two other Italian ultras, Filippo Lombardi and Daniele Sciusco, have been condemned for the clashes, but not for the aggression .
Sean Cox, his wife: "He will never return as before"
The Reds' fan's wife was also present in the courtroom. SeanCox, following the attack, suffered a severe head injury and his condition remains serious.
For four and a half weeks he remained in a specialized neurological unit at the Walton Center in Liverpool after the clashes near Anfield.
At the Independent Irish newspaper, Cox's wife recounted this drama in October. "Our life is not the same anymore ... I want to see him in the face, I'll be in the courtroom," she said.
"Sean sees double, sometimes triple, can not speak but he understands everything, he has the right side of the paralyzed body."
Cox was later transferred to the National Rehabilitation Center in Dun Laoghaire.
