India’s lone Women’s Wrestling Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik announced her return into form in style at the Dan Kolov Nikola Petrov Ranking series tournament at Ruse, Bulgaria.
The Rio Olympic Bronze medalist took to the mat in the 65 kg Women’s category in the second Ranking Series event of the year demolished her opponents all the way to reach the finals.
Putting behind an average 2018, Sakshi began her campaign in the pre-quarters with a thumping win over Viktoria Ivanova Bobeva of Bulgaria, who had earlier been a 68 kg wrestler, in a lop-sided bout with a scoreline of 14-3.
On the back of a crushing win, she defeated Adina Elena Popescu of Romania with a 4-1 scoreline in her next bout in the quarterfinals.
But a stern test awaited her in the semifinals where she faced reigning World champion Petra Maarit Olli of Finland. Sakshi gave her mighty opponent no chance and came out a comprehensive winner with a 4-1 win.
In the 59kg category, India’s Pooja Dhanda and Sarita have moved into the 3rd round in their category and as such medals will be decided tomorrow.
In the Men’s 61 kg Freestyle, India had two wrestlers Sandeep Tomar and Ravi Kumar in the fray. U-23 World championship silver medalist Ravi did not live up to the billing and bowed out to Ukraine’s Volodymyr Burukov in a closely fought bout.
The other wrestler, Sandeep Tomar more than made it up for Ravi’s early exit and assured a medal for himself after reaching the finals in the 61 kg category. He will face Nurislam Sanayev of Kazakhstan in the Finals.
