Sergio Ramos has been suspended for two games in the Champions League for deliberately receiving a yellow card in Real Madrid's victory at Ajax Amsterdam on 13 February in the first leg of the competition, announced the UEFA Disciplinary Committee on Thursday.
In the mixed zone, after the match won by Real (2-1), the central defender himself hinted that he had acted voluntarily, to be suspended for the last-16 return leg of the UEFA Champions league rather than risk being in the quarterfinals, before denying this. Result, Ramos will miss the quarter-final first leg of the competition in case of qualification of his team.
"The truth is that given the result (2-1 for Real Madrid), I would be lying if I said that it had not gone through my head," Ramos initially told reporters after the match, warned for a tough tackle late in the game (89th minute), just after the second goal Madrid.
"It's not to underestimate the opponent but sometimes you have to make a decision and that's what I did," he added, hinting that it was better to follow the return matchagainst the opposition, Ajax, from the stands of Santiago Bernabeu rather than risk an absence during a likely quarter-final.
About an hour later, the Real Madrid captain backed down on his Twitter account: "I want to clarify that I suffer more than anyone, I did not push with that kind of intention. In the game, there is has a lot of sensations, drive, you have to make a decision in a few seconds . "
This coaster did not convince UEFA, which launched in the wake of "disciplinary investigation" in connection "with the statements made by the player. The teammate of Ramos in Madrid, Dani Carvajal had already faced this kind of suspension, having deliberately obtained a yellow card in the group phase of the Chmapions league.
