India’s Subhankar Dey caused a big upset at the ongoing Swiss Open World Tour in Basel, Switzerland after he defeated fifth seed, Jonatan Christie of Indonesia 12-21, 22-20, 21-17 in a three-game thriller.
The World No.47 Subhankar battled for more than an hour and ten minutes to overcome the Asian Games champion. The Indian was down 12-21 in the opening game but held his nerve to comeback with a 22-20 scoreline in the second game, which went down to the wire.
In the third and the deciding game too he kept his cool and fended off the Indonesian with 21-17 scoreline.
The Indian who trains mostly in Denmark owing to his commitments for various Danish clubs also boasts of a Badminton Academy back home in Kolkota.
He will now face second seed Chen Long of China in the quarterfinals.
Earlier an all Indian Mixed Doubles second round encounter between the pair of MR Arjun and K Meenakshi & Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy went the former pair’s way with a 21-16, 16-21, 21-15 scoreline.
