China thrashed India 5-0 in the ongoing Sudirman Cup at Nanning, to inflict back-to-back losses and send India out of the tournament.
India’s Pranav Chopra and Sikki Reddy started the day with a 5-21, 11-21 loss at the hands of Wang Yilu and Huang Dongping in the mixed doubles match.
This was followed by Sameer Verma’s brave fight that lasted for an hour and 11 minutes against Chen Long but was eventually ousted 17-21, 20-22 in the men’s singles match.
The all-important men’s doubles match between Chirag Reddy-Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Han Chengkai-Zhou Haodong started with a 21-18 win for the Indians. This was the only match India won in the entire fixture.
However, the Chinese pair completed the turnaround with 21-15 and 21-17 wins in the second and third match, to seal India’s fate.
Saina Nehwal appeared for the first time in the tournament but bowed out after 12-21, 17-21 loss to Chen Yufei in the women’s singles match.
The tie was rounded off with the women’s doubles match between Ashwini Ponappa-Sikki Reddy and Jia Yifan-Chen Qingfang. It finished in favour of the Chinese as they triumphed 21-12, 21-15.
This win meant that the Chinese team won the tie 5-0 as the Indian team got eliminated from the ‘Group of Death’.
