India’s top shuttler PV Sindhu won her singles match but her efforts went in vain as India lost 3-2 to Malaysia in the campaign opener of Sudirman Cup 2019.
India started the day with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Ashwini Ponnappa's win over Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai in the mixed doubles match. The duo lost the first game but made an exceptional comeback to win the other two games 16-21, 21-17, 24-22.
In the next match, Sameer Verma faced Lee Zii Jia in the men’s singles and lost the challenge in straight games 13-21, 15-21.
Verma's loss was followed by Sindhu’s thumping win over Goh Jin Wei in the women’s singles. She triumphed 21-12, 21-8 in a match which lasted just over half an hour.
Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy put up a valiant fight against Aaron Chia and Teo Ee Yi in the men’s doubles but lost the match 20-22, 19-21.
The deciding match of the tie was Ashwini Ponappa-Sikki Reddy versus Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean in the women’s doubles.
After losing the first game 11-21, the pair was leading the next game 19-16 but the Malaysian team won five successive points and ended the match with a scoreline 21-11, 21-19.
With this win, Malaysia sealed the tie 3-2 in their favour. The Indian team will face China on May 22 in a must-win encounter.
