India's star shuttler Saina Nehwal has made her way into the final of ongoing Syed Modi Championship at Lucknow. After being a game down, Saina bounced back in style and defeated Indonesia's Ruselli Hartawan 12-21, 21-7, 21-6. The 28-year-old now leads Ruselli 1-0 in a head-to-head tally.
The match had a see-saw battle wherein both the shuttlers had the upper hand for once till the penultimate game. The first game saw Ruselli dominate on most occasions. She led comfortably and was 10-7 ahead at halfway mark. Saina, on the other hand, was found struggling for timing and reckless errors.
In the second game, Saina showed why she is labeled as a rusty starter. She conceded the opening game in a flash but bounced back in the following one. Saina rose to the occasion and dismantled Russell's early momentum. She bagged the penultimate game with a big margin; 21-7.
It all boiled down to the decider. Saina was more confident from thereon. She earned the lead and made amends to lead 12-3 at one stage. Ruselli was not able to handle the scoreboard pressure and succumbed. Meanwhile, Saina brought her experience into play and didn't give a sniff to her opposition after finding her rhythm.
In match statistics, Saina led Ruselli by an 8-3 margin in most consecutive points won. On the other hand, in total points played (88), she was ahead by 54-34.
