India's Satwiksairaj Renkireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa have bowed out of the ongoing Syed Modi Championship being held at Lucknow. Facing China's OU Xuanyi and Feng Xueying, the Indian pair gave a tough fight but were ordinary in patches to concede the contest in the deciding game. The final scoreline read: 12-21, 21-18, 19-21.
Ashwini and Satwiksairaj had their opposition in the initial moments of the first game. However, they quickly trailed 6-10 at halfway mark. From thereon, it was a one-way traffic as Xuanyi and Xueying upped their game to storm ahead; 21-12.
In the second game, Ashwini and Satwiksairaj clawed their way back. It was a competitive game but the Indians were up for a fight. They prevailed ahead in the fag moments of the penultimate game to stretch the encounter into the decider.
It started at evens, with both pairs being at 1-1 in terms of games won, and went down to the wire. Had Ashwini-Satwiksairaj not erred in the concluding moments, the result would have been in their favor. However, the Chinese deserve credit for being the better pair overall. They had the lead at crucial junctures and made it count in the third game.
Talking about match statistics, Ashwini-Satwiksairaj trailled Xuanyi-Xueying 3-4. In total points played, 112, they were behind courtesy a 52-60 margin.
