Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has refused the offer of an honorary doctorate from Jadavpur University. The doctorate will now be presented to iconic Indian boxer MC Mary Kom.
Legendary Indian batsman has refused to accept the doctorate on ‘ethical grounds’.
“We had decided to confer the honorary D. Lit to Mr. Sachin Tendulkar. We approached him but recently he has sent us an email mentioning that he will not be to accept honor citing Nitigoto (ethical) reasons,” Suranjan Das, Jadavpur University, Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University.
He added, “Tendulkar mentioned that he doesn’t accept such honor from any university. He even refused to accept a similar honor from Oxford University. He actually meant that he hasn’t earned it, it would not be right for him to accept the D. Lit.”
Sachin had previously rejected a similar award when he turned down the honorary D. Sc. In 2011, which was announced by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).
The honorary D. Lit will be conferred to boxer Mary Kom at the 63rd Annual Convocation of Jadavpur University scheduled on November 24.
