Following the success of the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018 in Bhubaneswar & Vitality Hockey Women’s World Cup 2018 in London, it is expected that there will be considerable interest in hosting these prestigious events which will take place in four years time.
16 of the world’s best men’s & women ’s team went head to head in India & Great Britain respectively to become world champions.
While the Women’s World Cup in London saw the world’s top-ranked women’s team, Netherlands, defeat Ireland to claim one of the biggest titles in the sport. In the Men’s World Cup Belgium defeated 3-time World champions the Netherlands, in a thrilling penalty shoot-out which went to sudden death (3-2).
The 2022 FIH World Cups, Men’s or Women ’s will be held either in July 2022 (1-17 July) or in January 2023 (13-29 January), as decided by the Executive Board of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in its meeting held last week in Bhubaneswar, India.
The bidding process to host either event has been re-opened until 31 January 2019. The Executive Board will make the final decision on both hosts on 14 June 2019.
It is worth mention that the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) is eyeing to host several international tournaments in the next four years including the World Cup. The MHC president Subahan Kamal had earlier said that the International Hockey Federation (FIH) had offered them, to host the inaugural men’s Hockey Series Finals in June next year, which serves as a qualifying stage for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
