2018 French Open finalist Dominic Thiem beat Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in straight sets 7-6(5) 6-2 to win the opening round of Halle Open on Monday.
The third seeded Thiem, who got thrashed by king of clay Rafael Nadal in his maiden grand slam final at Roland Garros, looked in great touch in the first round of his grass-court season.
The 24-year-old Thiem was unsuccessful to serve out the opening set at 5-4 but won the final three points in the tiebreak, before taking control of the match in the second set.
Meanwhile, the Austrian tennis giant Thiem is set to make his fifth consecutive appearance at Wimbledon next month but has never got beyond the fourth round.
Thiem will next take on Yuichi Sugita of Japan, who defeated German wildcard Maximilian Marterer 6-4 5-7 6-3.
