Day 4 of the Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary spelt more doom for the Indian athletes. Women wrestlers in 65 kg, 68 kg, 72 kg, 76 kg failed to make a mark on the mat.
The day featured bouts from Ritu (65 kg), Navjot Kaur (68 kg), Rajni (72 kg), Kiran (76 kg). All the wrestlers except Ritu could not progress beyond the Round of 16. Ritu, however, managed to make it to the quarter final where she fought valiantly against the number 1 seed, Finnish wrestler Petra Maarit Olli and lost the bout 2-6. The wrestler from Finland managed to make it to the finals and therefore paved the way for Ritu to feature in the repechages where she will have to win 2 bouts on the trot to win a Bronze medal.
Navjot Kaur who till recently fought in the 65 kg category moved to the 68 kg category and started off well by getting past Chinese Taipei wrestler Wen Ling Chen by 4-2. In the next round she was uip against a formidable opponent in 8th seed Koumba Selena Fanta Larroque of France who did not let Navjot make any inroads during the bout. The French also made it to the finals and by virtue of that progression Navjot stands a chance to have a crack at the Bronze medal in the repechage round.
72 kg category wrestler Rajni who got a straight entry in to the Round of 16, lost her bout against the Austrian opponent Martina Keunz 2-0. In the 76 kg category, Kiran beat her Chinese Taipei rival Hui Chang 6-0 in the Round of 32. But she couldn’t progress further as she was comprehensively taken down in a bout against the Kazakhstan wrestler Elmira Syzdykova which ended in a 2-12 loss with technical superiority from the Kazakh girl. Both the Indian girls bowed out of the competition and failed to make it to the repechage.
