ROGER FEDERER HAD TO BATTLE TO REACH THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE SWISS INDOORS TOURNAMENT, OVERCOMING AND GILLES SIMON IN THREE TIGHT SETS IN BASEL.
Roger Federer and Gilles Simon met in the quarter-finals of the Swiss Indoors tournament in Basel on Friday.
The top seed, playing in his home tournament, fell 3-0 down to the Frenchman, and trailed 5-2, before breaking back in the ninth game.
The set was decided by a tie-break and Simon was broken three times as the Swiss world number three took seven points to one.
The second set saw five breaks of serve, but it was the unseeded Simon who held firm in the 10th game on his first set point.
Federer isn't a winner of 20 Grand Slam titles for nothing, and even at the age of 37, he showed the commitment to hold off the challenge the 33-year-old Simon to come through 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-4 in two hours 36 minutes.
He will meet either Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece or Russia's Daniil Medvedev for a place in the final.
